FAQs

What you’ll need to know about store inventory and fulfillment.

Stores are increasingly used as fulfillment centers to support both online and in-store sales, which is often referred to as "omnichannel fulfillment" or "click-and-collect" and involves using store inventory to fulfill online orders, as well as offering customers the option to pick up their online orders at the store.

Stores can provide a wide range of options, including in-store pickup to allow customers to place online orders and pick them up outside at the curb, in a locker, or by coming inside the store to pick them up. Ship from store can also be offered for shipping or local delivery of products directly to customers from the store.

Inventory accuracy in retail stores has been traditionally low for reasons such as:

  • Manual data entry to track inventory levels, which can lead to errors.
  • Lack of standardization when different stores or departments within the same store use different methods to track inventory.
  • Complex supply chains where retailers often have multiple suppliers and distribution centers, which can make it difficult to accurately track inbound inventory replenishment.
  • High product turnover with large assortments of short life span products, making it challenging to accurately track inventory levels.
  • Inventory theft and shrinkage.
  • Lack of inventory management and automation technology.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology provides detailed item information via RFID tags, which are small chips attached to items like products in retail stores and are read using handheld or overhead RFID scanners.

Manhattan offers the most comprehensive support for in-store RFID in the industry, with native use of RFID data to track inventory as part of store inventory management and to find products in order picking for store fulfillment.
