January 2016 Logistics Market Snapshot
As 2016 begins, the January edition of the Logistics Market Snapshot, collated by the Georgia Center of Innovation for Logistics, is now available online. Looking at more than 300 sources of information from external resources including NASDAQ, the US Department of Transportation and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Market Snapshot provides insight into rail, trucking, air and ocean freight, warehouse and distribution, multimodal and US markets trends.
Below are a few interesting highlights from the January edition:
- Retail and food service sales decreased in December to $448.1 billion, down 0.1% from the previous month, and up 2.2% above December 2014. Non-store retailer sales were up 6.3% from last year. (Source: US Census)
- The Consumer Confidence Index increased to 96.5 in December 2015, up 6.7% from November. (Source: The Conference Board)
- The warehousing industry workforce increased by 3,200 employees to 792,400 employees total in December. The warehouse workforce increased 0.4% from the previous month and increased 6.0% year-over-year. (Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)
- The U.S. GDP increased 2.0% in the third quarter of 2015 according to the third preliminary estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis in late December. (Source: US BEA)
